I am a professor in the Department of Education Policy, Organization and Leadership, and Director of the Global Studies in Education program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. As a social anthropologist, my research deals with  questions around cultures and communities of learning, education and critical democracy, global generations and citizenship, critical ethnography, the history of ideas, and technology in relation to youth learning and political participation.  My regional expertise is in the Middle East, North Africa and West Asia, with a focus on Egypt.
