Linda Herrera, a social anthropologist with regional expertise in North Africa and West Asia (NAWA) with a focus on Egypt, is a professor in the Department of Education Policy, Organization and Leadership in the Global Studies in Education program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research deals broadly with education, citizenship, global policy, technology, and geopolitics.

Herrera grew up in San Francisco, received a BA in Middle East Studies at the University of California at Berkeley, and lived for 17 years in Egypt. She completed a MA in Anthropology/Sociology at the American University in Cairo and a PhD from Columbia University in International and Comparative Education. In addition to her university work, she has served as project director, consultant, and advisor to international and national organizations involved in the NAWA region. She moved to the Netherlands and taught international development studies at the International Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University, Rotterdam, where she served as convenor of the Children and Youth Studies (CYS) master’s specialization (2005-2010) . In 2011, she relocated to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s College of Education. She teaches courses at the post-graduate level in on-campus and online programs, and is affiliated with the Center for Global Studies, the European Union Center, and Center for South Asia and Middle East Studies.

Herrera’s research combines policy analysis with qualitative methods, notably critical ethnography and biographical research, to understand changing cultures, politics, and technologies of learning. In the aftermath of the 2011 Arab uprisings, she became concerned with questions around citizenship in the age of social media, youth and precarity, and educational transformation in times of momentous technological and global change. She is currently working as consultant in education policy and research for the Ministry of Education and Technical Education (MOETE) in Egypt.
