Linda Herrera, a professor in the Department of Education Policy, Organization and Leadership and Director of the Global Studies in Education program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is a social anthropologist with regional expertise in North Africa and West Asia (NAWA) with a focus on Egypt. Her research deals broadly with education, citizenship, globalization and geopolitics.

Herrera grew up in San Francisco, received a BA in Middle East Studies at the University of California at Berkeley, and lived for 17 years in Egypt. She completed a MA in Anthropology/Sociology at the American University in Cairo and a PhD from Columbia University in International and Comparative Education. She has worked as project coordinator and advisor to international organizations involved in the NAWA region. She moved to the Netherlands and taught international development studies at the International Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University, Rotterdam and served as convenor for the Children and Youth Studies (CYS) master’s specialization . In 2011, she relocated to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign College of Education where she teaches at the post-graduate level in on-campus and online programs and is involved with the Center for Global Studies, the European Union Center, and Center for South Asia and Middle East Studies.

Her research combines policy analysis with qualitative methods, notably critical ethnography and biographical research, to understand changing cultures, politics, and technologies of learning. More recently, Herrera has become concerned with youth and education in relation to changing practices of citizenship, livelihoods, migration and digital technologies. She believes strongly in the power of ideas and the value of building learning communities  to deliberate about and shape our lives and societies for the better.
